At Pine59, we are developing products for the rapidly growing data industry and the need to know how humans interact with the physical world.

We innovate to create products which leverage sources of temporal and spatial data that help explain human and device movement. Our products are built to help with city planning, making decisions within retail and real estate, emergency planning and more. With the acceleration of AI, the opportunity to grow and develop a high quality location data product is optimal.

As a result, we are not only developers, we are inventors and product owners! We wish to drive the industry forward by creating tools that have not been possible previously, due to new advances in cloud technology, AI and location data.

The role

At Pine59, we build products from the largest communications datasets available. This is a rapidly growing industry, and our product scope and reach is expanding to meet this demand. As a result, we are excited to be expanding our team, and are searching for an enthusiastic Data Scientist with a product mindset to join us.

Our teams are multidisciplinary, with product, data engineering, data science, machine learning and data analysis coming together in one team to develop competitive products. While closely collaborating with various teams and stakeholders within the company, we have the freedom of innovation and experimentation to develop high-quality and privacy-friendly location data insights that can change the location data industry for good.

Specifically for this role, you will develop and improve statistical data products used by clients around the world. Pine59 emphasises anonymisation and privacy, ensuring the location events never even have to leave a customer's servers (thus ensuring security). It is important that you have a strong product and value oriented mindset and want to understand the true end value of what we are building.

This is an on-site hybrid position, with 3-4 days a week working in our Oslo office (or more if you want!). Our main office is on Karl Johans Gate in the heart of Oslo, where we meet every week with our international colleagues. Being part of Pine59 means being part of a friendly and efficient workplace, with opportunities to grow and advance within the company.

Key responsibilities

  • Be part of a team owning location data products end to end: methodology, validation, production pipelines, and the quality and usefulness of what clients receive
  • Invent and improve the methods that turn vast quantities of anonymised location data into reliable aggregate data products
  • Validate results against ground truth and external sources, quantify bias and uncertainty, and track down the cause when the numbers shift
  • Build robust data pipelines in BigQuery SQL and Python, with monitoring that detects data drift and quality issues before they reach clients

Required qualifications

  • You have an academic degree equivalent to a Bachelor's or higher in a quantitative field such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, physics or engineering
  • You have at least 2 years of professional experience in data science
  • You have a strong ownership mentality and passion for what you build
  • You have rich experience in using Python and SQL for data processing (preferably within the BigQuery dialect)
  • You communicate clearly in English, both in writing and in person, and can explain technical results to people without a technical background
  • You are a positive force. Adaptable and full of curiosity, you enjoy a high degree of collaboration and working in a team
  • You are value oriented and want to understand how the products you build are used
  • You have some basic data engineering skills (Airflow especially)
  • You have experience working with geospatial data
  • You are adept at using AI tooling to be effective

Most relevant technologies

  • BigQuery
  • Python
  • Git
  • Apache Airflow
  • Visualization tools: Kepler.gl, matplotlib, +

What we expect of you

  • We expect you to be positive-minded with a “can do” attitude to tackle challenges together with your team
  • We are a startup, so things can change fast and you need to be agile and proactive on this journey
  • We have customers using the product daily, so you will take part in an on-call rotation, during normal working hours only
